Carolina Crown 2024 Program: ‘Promethean’

Born from Greek mythology, the story of Prometheus is one of heroism, sacrifice, hope, and progress. Prometheus' story begins in an act of defiance against Zeus, stealing fire from atop Olympus and bringing it to earth. With the fire, Prometheus forges humanity from rock and clay, infusing humanity with not just life, but with intention and purpose. However, humanity misuses this gift - enjoying the excesses of life rather than enriching the world and Zeus, enraged by Prometheus's creation of humanity, sentences Prometheus to thirty thousand years of eternal torture. Bound to the face of Olympus,  each day an eagle devours his liver. Throughout his suffering, Prometheus' hope in humanity never waivers and he pleads with Zeus to give humanity a second chance. Moved by his unbreakable spirit of defiance and hope, Zeus relents and shares Olympus’ flame with humanity once again. Humanity, recognizing Prometheus’ sacrifice on their behalf, embraces the Olympus flame and uses it to create music, dance, and art.

This is a story that has been told in many variations across centuries. At its core it is a story of humanity embracing the Promethean ideal, of being daringly original and creative - the story of dance, music, and art.
