Why I Come Back
I
came to Carolina Crown in 2000, and I came because a friend of mine was marching
and a friend of mine was teaching.
That’s it. I didn’t know
anyone else, I had never heard a drum corps show live, and I had never heard of
Carolina Crown prior to then. But I
was encouraged to try out, and I did, and I made the hornline in 2000.
I came back to Carolina Crown in 2001 and 2002 because I loved it—I loved the people, the experiences, and the competition. I came back because I wanted to do everything I could to improve upon the rock solid foundation already in place at Carolina Crown, and because I felt I could offer some leadership and guidance and help build a program that would continue to be strong years after I left. I came back for the members, for the friends I made, and for the experiences I knew I would have. Carolina Crown is my home, and it is where I belong.
I have marched under Michael Shapiro and Paul Rennick for 3 years, and under Larry Markiewicz for 2, and I can’t even begin to describe how much their teaching has influenced me and has made me a better person. But I love Carolina Crown more than I love those teachers, and that is why I will not follow them to another corps in 2003.
Everyone has his or her own personal reasons for marching, and I totally understand and respect that. But I encourage each of the members who marched in 2002 to look inside yourselves and examine why exactly you love the drum corps activity, and why you choose to come back and do it again. I hope you will find that the Carolina Crown has been a family—a home—for you. I hope that your love for and loyalty to the organization and to the other members of the organization supercede any other motivations or desires you may have.
Let’s build upon what we have now, and let’s start 2003 with a fresh new look, an eager staff, and a core group of returning veterans ready and willing to make this summer the best ever. Let’s improve upon the still-growing talent in the corps, and let’s come back in 2003 with a vengeance. Let’s continue to build a program—together—that will still be strong years after we leave. Let’s finish what we have started.

Note – This month’s profile is a
little different format. The
following is a letter to Crown’s Board of Directors telling the story of a truly
great volunteer act.
To: Carolina Crown Board of Directors
Subject: A Great Volunteer
I wanted you to know this story
about another great volunteer we have within the Crown family...
Sunday when the corps returned from
Madison there as usual was a small number of parents that were late picking up
their kids (we actually arrived an hour or so earlier than our posted time so I
expected at least some delay).
Well, at 11:20pm when the last parent arrived we still had two members
left to go. One I already had
planned to take to my house for the night as he could not get a ride and the
next bus didn't leave until the morning.
The other was stressing out because he expected his mom to be there and
he said that she was the type that is never late. Well, he couldn't locate her and she
still wasn't there so we decided to take him home with us. We left word on the corps voicemail
where to contact us in case she called and planned to get him to a bus or
whatever in the morning. Well, there were a few calls from relatives and his mom
through the night and apparently she did make it to Fort Mill but turned around
and went back home to Fayetteville, NC when she couldn't find us. She therefore told him to get on the
8:00am bus to Fayetteville on Monday morning.
This is where the story really
starts... well since Moe had to go do our bakery pick-up at Costco on Monday
morning she enlisted Kim Rosenfeld to take the member to the Rock Hill bus
station early that morning. For
those of you that do not know, Kim is our summer office Operations Assistant
that has worked the past two summers handling primarily NightBEAT-related
duties. She also volunteers throughout the year in various ways and is a
"go-between" for the FM Band Boosters and us as she is a very active band
parent.
Well, while Kim was taking the
member to the bus station he mentioned that he had some type of school-related
exam on Monday afternoon that he was now going to miss because the bus wouldn't
get him home until 7:00pm. So what
did Kim do? She drove him all the
way to Fayetteville, some 300 miles roundtrip, so he would not miss his
exam!!! What a great volunteer and
person to do such a thing for someone she just met a few minutes earlier!!!
You know, one of the reasons we
moved our office to Fort Mill a few years ago was to build a strong relationship
with the schools/community and tap into the very strong support the Fort Mill
Band always got from their band parents and other members of the community. With people like Kim, Larry and Shirley
Gibson, Ron Lordo, Martin Dickey, Jason Ford, Kirk Godbey, Sean Carney, Cathy
Cloughly, Jan Arnold, Chris Tough and others, it is easy to see that the
relationship is getting stronger and we are really benefiting from it!!!
Please take the time to thank Kim
for this extraordinary effort to help one of our members when you see her next
in the office, at a NightBEAT meeting or at a camp this winter!
Crown Donates Over 1000 lbs of Food to Needy
Carolina Crown has been doing their part in supporting the community of Fort Mill with their donations of bread and pastries to the Fort Mill Care Center. We have been delivering bread to the Care Center since June and have donated over 1000 lbs to help service the community's needs.

Annual Carolina Crown Golf Tournament A Big Success
The 5th Annual Carolina Crown Golf Tournament,
scheduled for August 26, 2002, was a huge success. This year the rain
stayed away thanks to Jamey Ellisor for playing his Tympani to the Rain
Gods.

Carol Srdar, one of DCI’s 2001 Volunteers of the Year, has organized a
tremendously successful one-day fundraising event, raising over $90,000.00 in
2002, far surpassing her personal goal of $75,000.00.
We would like to thank Carol and all the volunteers
who helped make this event a success. A great big “THANK YOU” goes to the players and their generosity to whom we
are most grateful!
Carol is already planning for the 6th annual Golf
Tournament, but no official date has been announced. Everyone
is hoping that Jamey comes back to keep
the rain away!
We thank all those who gave their time and talents to
the tournament:

Carolina Crown Inc. held it's annual Board of

chaired by President Bill Loelius was attended by some 29 directors and

following year's budget. With the elections that took place the Crown
Board is now full at 35 directors. (See separate article in this issue of

The Board also unanimously
passed the 2003 Budget, a relatively easy task on the heels of the best
financial year in the organization's history.
The "Retreat" portion of
the meeting involved break-out groups brainstorming new ways to leverage the
organziation's resources to develop new funding sources and enhance/protect
existing sources. Some great ideas were generated by the groups for
further discussion and potential implementation by the Executive
Committee.
Ten Added To Crown Board
At their annual Board of Directors Meeting on
September 29 the Crown Board of Directors added ten additional people to their
ranks to fill a combination of new and vacated seats. With these ten

Brian Bambauer
Brian graduated from Miami
University in Oxford, OH in 1990 with a B.M. in Music Education. A native
Ohioan, Brian began his professional career as the Junior High Band Director and
assistant marching band director at Northmont City Schools, in Clayton,
OH. He then took a position as the Instrumental Music Coordinator for the
West Carrollton City Schools in West Carrollton, OH from 1994-1997.
Brian's drum corps experience began with the Bluecoats from Canton, OH in
1988. A member for three years, he played mellophone and was Drum Major in
1989 and 1990. He joined their instructional staff in 1991 as a visual
tech, and the served as visual caption head in 1993 and 1994. Brian joined
the Carolina Crown family in 1997 as a visual tech, and then became the drill
designer from 1998-2000. Brian worked full time for the organization as Director
of Operations from 1999 - 2002.
Currently Brian is in the Educational
Leadership Graduate Program at the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte. Brian writes drill for numerous marching bands and indoor
percussion lines, as well as consults and adjudicates throughout the United
States including the New Jersey State Marching Band Finals in

Ben Brinson was born in Honolulu, Hawaii
and with a father in the military, lived in numerous places while growing
up. Ben is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelors Degree

Crown starting with Larry in 1997, and ending in 2001 when Loraine was one of
the two Drum Majors for the Corps. The first two years Ben volunteered to help
at a few events. It wasn't until the 1999 season however that he finally
figured out that if he wanted to see his family and be able to understand what
they were all talking about around the dinner table, he might as well join them
at camps and part of the summer tour. Since that time Ben has become a
valuable asset to Crown in many areas, but isprobably best known for his
contributions in the Crown kitchen. Ben has always loved to cook and looks
forward to the challenge of taking his recipes and making them work for 100+
people. He has spent countless hours planning and preparing meals for the
corps during winter camps and spring training, much to everyone's delight.
In addition to his meals, Ben has also been instrumental to improvements to the
food truck through his ideas and many contributions. He may have joined
Crown in the beginning to be with his family, but Crown is now a part of his
family.

Charles moved to Fort Mill about 5
years ago from Richmond VA. He met past Crown board member Ron Lordo at

that being a part of the Carolina Crown will be a rewarding accomplishment,
whether it is playing on the field, or serving as a board member." Charles
brings some strong skills to the group including marketing and unique fund
raising ideas.

Board of What?

1. Determine the organization’s mission and purpose
2. Select the chief executive
3. Support the chief executive and assess his or her performance
4. Ensure effective organizational planning
5. Ensure adequate resources
6. Manage resources effectively
7. Determine, monitor, and strengthen the organization’s programs and services
8. Enhance the organization’s public standing
9. Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability
10. Recruit and orient new board members and assess board performance
You might not see them at the camps or on the road (although many board members do volunteer in these capacities), but the board of directors is always working to ensure that Carolina Crown has what it needs to succeed—the right mission, best leadership, and adequate resources to achieve our goals.
