Largest Crowd
Yet for 3rd Annual CrownClub Weekend Our 3rd annual CrownClub Weekend 5/16-18 (the May camp weekend) was another big success. Some 40 parents, fans, volunteers, alumni, etc attended this fun-filled educational weekend. This was our best attendance for this 3rd-year event, and it was great to see alot of new faces in the crowd. Some of the highlights of the weekend included 1) DCI Hall of Famer Michael Cesario blowing away the crowd with his amusing thoughts on volunteerism, teamwork, designing and more; 2) Design team members Jim Coates, Michael Klesch, Paul Rennick and Leon May explaining what goes into designing a great drum corps program; and 3) members of the 2003 Student Leadership Task Force (Amanda Kachurak, Jamey Ellisor, Seth Murphy and Ryan Burd) answering such questions as "Why do you do Crown?" and "What has been your most interesting/funny/enjoyable experience at Carolina Crown?", etc. The Ft. Mill HS band boosters assisted with food service for the weekend to allow our volunteers to attend the event. Thanks to Kim Rosenfeld and Chris Tough for coordinating this!
Carolina Crown Hosts 2nd Annual Summer Music Camp

They were assisted by other members of Crown's faculty/administration. Over 70 students from fifteen different music programs from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia attended this year's event. Participants enjoyed lunch and received a souvenir T-shirt as part of the event.
3rd Annual Crown Student Leadership Camp a Hugh Success Carolina Crown hosted their 3rd Annual Student Leadership Camp the weekend of 5/23-25 at Clover HS, their Spring Training home. The event was attended by 25 members that were nominated by their caption heads as being 2003 student leaders of the corps. The weekend included educational sessions dealing with diversity, competition, teamwork, etc presented by Crown board members, caption heads, area band directors, administrators and several outside speakers. The weekend was not all work as the entire group enjoyed dinner and some social time Saturday night at Jillian's in Charlotte. On Sunday afternoon, the participants also helped prepare the facility for the arrival of their fellow members at Spring Training.

What does a leader do? I had the pleasure of visiting the Carolina Crown Student Leadership
Camp which kicked–off “everydays” on Memorial Day weekend. I was joined
by four other board members in a panel discussion with our 21 student
leaders regarding what we do as leaders of the organization, why we
do it, and to discuss leadership skills in general. I shared a leadership quote from John Maxwell with the group that makes me wonder if Mr. Maxwell himself was ever involved in a drum corps: “The first step to leadership is servanthood.” I can’t imagine a better way to summarize the leadership philosophy that permeates everything we do at Carolina Crown. The panel discussion certainly crystallized this fact for me. This was the first time I ever heard fellow board members speak about leadership and why they do what they do, and it was quite moving. The message was clear—we do this to make a difference in the lives of others…to serve. How many leadership camps did you attend in your youth? I can count them on a closed fist. Imagine 21 young people coming together voluntarily to learn what it takes to be a leader. I think they already know what it takes—and I thank each of them for showing me.
“On the field, from Fort Mill, South Carolina…” We’ll hear those words at least 30 times this summer, resonating in high school and college football stadiums in front of thousands upon thousands of fans standing and cheering and applauding us. We’ll step on the field, and for 11 minutes—11 fast paced, thrilling, electric minutes—we’ll take center stage in a production that will dazzle you, engulf you, and mesmerize you. As musicians, as dancers, as marchers, as conductors, as performers, we’ll radiate an energy that can’t be explained in mere words, can’t be described in a few sentences. We’ll be absolutely amazing this summer, and we want you there with us—to stand for us, to cheer for us, to feed off our energy and to applaud us.
