Volunteer Profile - Bill Loelius

Bill Loelius, was born and raised in Secaucus, NJ until a job transfer brought him to Charlotte in 1986.  Bill holds BBA and MBA degrees from Montreat College, and he has a diversified business background in sales, marketing, management, procedural auditing, and financial analysis.  He marched in the Royal Brigade, a New Jersey “old school” drum corps.  Bill was one of our original “band of brothers”, who were instrumental in the formation of Carolina Crown.  The original group that started it all had synergy.  Bill was part of that synergy.  He was very insightful, a terrific negotiator, and the person we called in to smooth out difficult issues.

Charter Board Member Doug Madar states, "Bill is a behind the scenes person who steps in when called upon.  He has always helped at NightBEAT and most other Crown functions, no matter what the event was.  Bill was at all the early yard sales and even hosted some of them at his house.  I remember going to many a newsletter folding party at Bill's house and many other locations."

What comes around goes around.  Bill was our first president.  He is now president again.  But how the scenario has changed.  Crown has grown ten-fold and now Bill is at the helm of an entirely different organization.  It's Bill's pre-planning and thoughtfulness that now moves the organization forward.  Bill has pushed for succession planning and oversight committees, to make sure Carolina Crown Inc will be here for many years.  "Bill's professionalism really fosters a tremendous 'team' approach to the way the organization is managed.  He is an extremely supportive leader," notes Crown Director Kevin Smith.

Bill is also involved in other things outside of the Crown family.  He is very active in church activities and plays drums at Sunday services.  He is president of his homeowners association.  He teaches at Strayer University and is a part owner of ROS Inc., an outsourcing accounts receivable company.  Bill and his wife Kathy have three boys.

Bill is one terrific volunteer.  We thank you for your leadership and support.

Happy New Year!

As we begin this New Year, everyone has an idea or hope of what the New Year will bring. Some people make promises to themselves that they will exercise more, or eat healthier, or spend more time with their family. Drum Corp members make a promise in November and December to spend their summer working hard everyday outside in the heat and traveling around the country on a bus. As we enter the months of January and February people begin to question the commitment they made because of financial, school, or personal problems. January and February is also the time people are offered spots that they earned through hard work at the audition camps.

I ask everyone who is offered a spot in the 2004 Carolina Crown to take the time to think about the commitment they are making. Remember you are not just making a commitment to yourself; this is a commitment to all the volunteers, administration, staff, and the other 134 members of the 2004 Carolina Crown. You are accepting the responsibility of being at the rehearsals, practicing hard, and doing your best to make 2004 the best year in the history of Carolina Crown. This is not an easy commitment, if Drum Corp were easy everyone would do it. Just remember the harder something is to accomplish, the more meaningful it is when you accomplish it. There are many rewards to being a member of the 2004 Carolina Crown: the thrill of performance, many memories, a close family of friends, and many more. After taking time to think about it I am sure that everyone will make the right decision do their part to make 2004 the best year for Carolina Crown.

The January camp is in two weeks and I can't wait. The first two camps have been fantastic and I just wanted to thank everyone for their hard work. Just remember the more we improve now the better we will become in August which is only 8 months away. Keep up the hard work and I will see you at the January Camp.

"The NightBEAT Notice"

It is now officially 2004 and the turn of the calendar means that we will very soon know our official dates and lineups from Drum Corps International.  We should have that posted by the end of the month, so log on to http://nightbeat.carolinacrown.org and we will keep you updated.

Meanwhile, in the midst of the holiday fund drive-and we definitely encourage you to donate any amount that you can- the NightBEAT committee will also like to invite you to look at another avenue of contributing to Crown through the show in the form of sponsorships, advertising and/or volunteering.

No matter which form of contribution you choose, financial or physical, the feeling of goodwill and satisfaction you will receive in putting these superior young people center stage in front of almost 8000 fans, including over 4200 high school band students, is incredible!

All three of these categories are very important to the success of Crown and NightBEAT.  Whether you are a business owner interested in a sponsorship or advertisement for your company, a parent interested in ad space to honor your child in the corps, or just a big fan who wants to give some time and contribute to the cause, we would love to have you!

Choose the best method of contribution for you, log in your information on our webpage, and the NightBEAT staff will get back to you as soon as possible to work with you personally.

Lastly, if you have attended the show in the past, we are still interested in any feedback you have regarding the show.  We are constantly evaluating what is working and what could be better and the best resource to gather that information is you.  Please fill out our feedback form on the webpage.

Next time, I will have the dates and lineups ready for you!

Keith Miller
NightBEAT Chairman
