Crown Guard Readies for Great 2001 Season

Hoping to build on their WGI World Class Finalist season of 2000, the 27 member Crown Guard of Dayton, OH is preparing for another run at the top echelon of the winter color guard activity.  Michael Shapiro is Crown Guard's founder, director and designer.

The show is titled "The Mission" and features music from  the motion picture soundtrack of the same name. Inspired by tribal ritual, the guard performs on a stretched out animal hide. The show hints at images of the rainforest through color and props.
The guard will be attending the WGI Indianapolis regional Feb 11-13, the WGI Mid South Regional (Nashville) Feb 24, and the WGI MidEast Regional March 19-21 en route to the World Championships in Milwaukee.  Included in this year's membership are 6 from last summer, 3 from 99 and before.  Guard Captains are Andrea Heary, 2 year Carolina Crown vet Stacey Flannery, and 3 year Crown vet Sean Cooney are all members of the 2001 Crown Guard.

Carolina Visual Productions Begins Another Season with High Expectations

Carolina Visual Productions (CVP), the Carolina Crown affiliated winter color guard from Raleigh, NC is off to a great start for their 2001 season according to Director Dwayne Barnes.  Their show this season is Blue Skies by BT, with background vocals by Tori Amos.  The guard will be attending the WGI Eastern, Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic Regionals and the WGI championships in Milwaukee.

The guard is marching 18 members, and the Guard Captains are Courtney VanBeck and Sammi Derr.  Both are 3 year vets of CVP, and Sammi will ageout this season.  The 2001 faculty includes Equipment choreographer - Ben Mitrano; Drill Designer - Richard Burgess; Movement Choreographer - Shannon Proctor; Tech - Brad Tilley; and Consultant - Amanda VanDreumel.

This year the organization also has a second unit, CVP II.  They have 8 members, and the Captains are Melissa Hannold and Christa Kohler.  Their show is a remake of the Sting song "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic!" They will be traveling to the WGI Carolina Regional.

Carolina Crown wishes both of these groups the very best for the 2001season!

Crown Names First of Two 2001 Drum Majors

At the conclusion of the Crown's January rehearsal camp, Executive Director Kevin Smith named 2nd-year member David Roth of Marietta, GA as the first of two drum majors selected to lead the corps in 2001.  David is one of two children, having an eighteen year old sister, Jennifer.  He attended Pope HS in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, where he played clarinet during his sophmore year in the marching band and was the drum major during his junior and senior years.   He was an All-State clarinetist, and was  awarded the "John Philip Sousa Band Award" while at Pope.  He was a National Finalist (5th place overall) in the PTSA "Reflections" composition competition during his senior year in high school, as well as a "Who's Who" recipient.  David is now a Music Education/Composition major at the University of Georgia - Athens.  He marched in the Crown brass line in 2000, and received the Outstanding 1st-Year Brass Member Award at the Corps' recent annual awards banquet.  David is also the chairperson of Crown's 2001 Student Leadership Task Force, a new Crown initiative aimed at enhancing the leadership qualities of all the Corps' student leaders.

Carolina Crown's practice is to select drum majors from within the Corps (i.e, "vets" whom have marched at least one prior year).  A formal selection process is used involving 1) an interview with senior faculty members and corps administration; 2) an audition involving leading and conducting the corps through some recently learned music; and 3) the handling of various assignments during several camps which involve using a number of attributes needed by a successful student leader.  Three other drum major candidates have been involved in this process this year: Trevor Cox, Seth Murphy, and Loraine Womble.  Due to the tight competition among these three candidates, the decision to name this year's 2nd drum major was postponed until the close of the February camp.  This will allow them another month to work on several areas of possible enhancement pointed out for each of them by the selection team.  Of course, each of these fine young people will be "leaders" within the Corps in 2001 regardless of the results of the drum major selection process.

Congratulations David, and best wishes to Loraine, Seth and Trevor!

                          New Year's Resolutions

So, yeah, January 1st was weeks ago, and yeah, many New Year's resolutions have already been made and broken since then, but I'd like to offer a couple resolutions of my own in anticipation of the 2001 season.  Feel free to adopt any or all of these, or modify them as you wish:

I resolve that I will work hard this season, with the ultimate goal being
that I will do my part in putting together a show I can be proud of, all
the while learning about music, teamwork, and friendship.

I resolve that I will do everything in my power to ensure that this edition of Crown 2001 is the best ever, and that we will reach new standards of excellence set for us this year.

I resolve that I will make new friends, keep the old, and make Carolina
Crown my family during these winter camps and the coming summer tour.

Lastly, I resolve that when this season is finished, I will look back on it
with fond memories, because Crown 2001 is going to be absolutely
unbelievable.

From being at the first three winter camps and anticipating great things from the next three, I know that this season is going to be great.  The members who will don the royal purple uniforms on the field this summer, and who will call themselves members of the 2001 Carolina Crown, have proven already to be of high caliber, hardworking, and committed to the art of music-making and performing.   I look forward to sharing the memories of this year with all of you?

See you on the field!

David Roth
